Digital Fluency Intensive Day 1 Reflection - Core Business

Craig's Professional Blog

DFI Day1 - Frustrations and Freedoms

  1. What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I have gained a greater appreciation of the kaupapa and content of the programme's approach. Even though I had spoken to colleagues from the first cohort this year I was still not sure what to expect. The first day has clarified that and given me a proper understanding of the meaning of digital fluency.

  2. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Sitting down and taking the time to learn about the capabilities of the digital tools available now can enhance productivity and self efficacy in their use. The more you use them the more confident you become and, therefore, the more likely you are to use them in the future with yourself and your students.

  3. What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

The various tools such as google docs and slides aside, what I have gained from day one is the importance and relevance for students to develop digital fluency. With it they can develop a digital literacy that would serve them well in school and in life. However, what today has also highlighted is that content delivered by this means is contingent on access and assumptions that this is equitable are not valid outside of the normal school environment.

  4. What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

To use the tools I am currently familiar with more fully, effectively and efficiently.

Classroom Implementation.

1. I have included voice typing into my reading programme to encourage out loud reading and develop fluency. This has resulted in one of my students, who is on the spectrum, being happy and safe enough to read outloud to the class for the first time this year.

2. Have had whole class discussions on the capabilities of chromebooks and programmes within.

3. Used a version of my create task to showcase student involvement in the Police Competency Test.

  1. Kia ora Craig, I like the title of your blog post. Despite the challenges you had with connecting via Chrome, you soldiered on. Your create task is great. Will you be displaying this in class or sharing on your class blog? Great to have you in our digital bubble. See you next week.

  2. Hi Amy, thank you. In the end, everything turned out okay. I have had Jason sort out my Google password issue and hopefully tomorrow I can set Chrome as my default browser so when I open the meeting link it is loaded instead of Safari. That should help streamline things but being on rural broadband I think my issues are here to stay, hence my comment in question 3. I will have to see what Thursday brings.
With regards my create task, yes I will be using it straight away. I took students to the PCT on Friday so I will use the new photos in the task, with text modifications, to show their efforts in the school newsletter. I will upload that too on here.
    See you Thursday.
    Regards
    Craig

  3. Kia ora Craig,
Sounds like you had a challenging start to the course! If you've managed to keep calm and carry on from that, the following weeks should be sweet - well done for persevering!
